In the mid 1920s, Bessie Elliott and her husband Fletcher take in their six-year-old nephew John. They are determined to give him a warm and secure home on Stone Mountain, a place where he will feel loved and know he is always welcome.

Having a child brings many changes to their daily life and even more for John, but it isn’t long before he feels completely at home with his aunt and uncle. As he learns about the farm animals, the wildlife and plant life on the mountain, he grows into a young man Bessie and Fletch are proud to call their own.

But their life is not without turmoil. Bessie’s healing skills are put to the test when she and Doc Widby deal with an unknown and mysterious illness, one they have no idea how to treat. While doing their best to heal their patient, they run up against a new doctor in Black Mountain who is involved with the Eugenics movement, a program Bessie fiercely opposes. And Bessie and Fletch, along with the rest of their neighbors, are torn apart by a foe threatening the natural beauty of Stone Mountain.

I have now finished the complete C C Tillery series and I have to say I hated for it to be over with. I loved this series more than I am able to express. What a great family history and a wonderful flow to the book. It is so easy and paced perfectly. I have wretched with heartache and cried with the family and pictured all the beauty this family lived on Stone Mountain. The hilarious situations have had me rolling off the bed with tears of some of the crazy antics that have taken place. I highly recommend you start with the first book and read the whole journey of this Appalachian mountain family history. You won't regret it. Ok, I'll stop gushing about it because I could go on and on....love you girls, keep writing. 😆

Wise Woman Appalachian Journey Book 4 edition by CC Tillery Cyndi Tillery Hodges Christy Tillery French Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Ever since I read C C Tillery first book,,I have watched for more about her family,,and stone mountain,,all the folks there..I was so pleased to read more of Bessie,,Fletcher,,their love,,marriage..then to know they had prospered,,love stronger,,plus they were able to get baby John to raise..was a real blessing.
Their books remind me so much of my grandparents, and growing up in the mountains of Kentucky..
I could not stop hardly to sleep.
If you were raised in country or in those years before television, telephones,,electricity,,and inside toilets,,you will love the series,,learn a lot about the history of that time period.
Now I hope there is another book about the family..but if not I will be forever thankful that I read,,enjoyed,,loved everyone of That precious family.
If you have not read all four then download all four. I have completely enjoyed all four of these books. These two sisters have brought to life their great aunt and uncle to such a degree that now that the books are over I feel like I have personally lost these people. I felt like these people were a real part of my family and I will miss them greatly. These are very good books and have a certain amount of historical non-fiction to make them really interesting. These books are an easy read but refreshing in that there is little violence and sex that unfortunately litter a lot of books today. It is a wonderful story about two very loving people and their lives. The characters are real people that lived from one type of century to another. Do yourselves a favor, read all four and enjoy the characters as much as I have. I only wish the series could go on but everything good must come to an end. To both Ms. Tillery, thank you for sharing your ancestors with us and for great stories.
I usually read antebellum/Civil war books that are fiction but based on fact.
This time I decided to try something different. I downloaded Whistling Woman to read while on a flight. I found it to be interesting and well written. Though short, I enjoyed Bessie Daniels and life in the mountains of North Carolina in the late 19th century.
After finishing Whistling Woman, I wanted to follow Bessie and her family as she grew. She eventually becomes a healer following in the footsteps of her Cherokee great grandmother.
I ended up reading the entire series and enjoyed them all.
If you are looking for an easy entertaining read start with Whistling Woman and progress through the series.
I would like to thank the authors of these wonderful books. They were wonderful to read the life stories about your family. It was in a time that was more peaceful, although there was a lot of work for folks they pulled together and believed in GOD. I grew up living with my grandparents and loved them deeply. These stories brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Thank you again for sharing.
Wise Woman - The last book in the series brings the reader to the end of Bessie's long life and places it in context with historical times. We also finally put John and his descendants in context with Bessie and Fletcher. Richly told and finely woven, the series is a blend of Cherokee remedies, stories, and traditions blended with everyday mountain life and historical events. Tillery's technique carries well through the first three novels with an abundance of stories about Bessie and Fletcher. However, in this fourth novel, after Fletcher passes, the story seems to lose some of its richness which is probably because of John's feelings towards Bessie's second husband. While I understand why this situation could have happened, for me it was a bit of a let down after the previous amount of detail. I still would recommend this book without reservation.
I love CC Tillery books. I have read all 4 of the series. Book 4 Wow what an amazing story. Thank you for the historical factual input. Some I knew, some I didn't know, some was a great review and reminder. This book brought so many emotions. I laughed, I smiled, I reflected, I prayed, I highlighted, I posted and shared, and I cried. I am a Speech Pathologist. I work in LTC (long term care - nursing home) I have heard many stories of longing for home, missing loved ones and having nothing but memories to carry them through each day. I know decisions are always made in the best interest and safety of our aging family. Home is where the heart is....and LTC really never becomes a home. It is a place to live, receive medical services, therapy services and many other services. As Aunt Bessie said, "no more chores for me to do" it is "chores" that keep us healthy. She wanted to plant her garden one more time. And, I cried. Everyone should read this series.
What a wonderful end to a beautiful book series. I just finished reading it and I am so happy to be the first giving a review.
I am recommending this series of books to anyone that loves a great adventurous God loving true family story. A family with more than their share of life's up's and downs.
I think we would have all loved to have had Bessie and Fletcher Elliott as our neighbors or relative. They gave so much to their mountain community and received back the respect they so richly deserved.
Thank you to the authors for sharing this wonderful family experience with all of us. Your father was so blessed to have been a huge part of Bessie and Fletchers' lives as they were with having him in their humble, but loving home.
